Frequently Asked Questions

General Training

  • We use positive reinforcement training, a scientifically backed, punishment-free method that prioritizes humane and effective learning. Our approach follows the LIMA protocol (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), ensuring a compassionate and cooperative training experience. This method is highly effective for both general obedience and behavior modification in dogs.  To read more about our training philosophy, click here.

  • Training timelines vary for each dog and depend on several factors, including age, breed, home environment, past experiences, and training goals. To learn what a training plan might look like for you and your dog, book a free consultation here.

  • Absolutely! We work with puppies and adult dogs of all breeds, sizes, and personalities.

  • Along with general obedience training, we can address various behavior challenges, including loose leash walking, leash pulling, reactivity, separation anxiety, and resource guarding.

We do not currently handle major dog-to-human or dog-to-dog aggression. If your dog requires specialized support, we’d be happy to refer you to a behaviorist who can help.

  • Before a private session or day training, we always start with a consultation session to determine you and your dog’s needs, behavior challenges, training goals, and the best approach for a customized training plan. From there, we can determine which type of training would be best for you and your dog.

Private Sessions: One-on-one training at your home to assess and address specific behavior challenges with a customized plan.

Day Training: A trainer works directly with your dog in your home for multiple sessions, followed by a session with you to transfer skills.

Online Sessions: Online coaching for training guidance, behavior assessments, and personalized plans, no matter where you are.

  • We will provide a clicker (if needed) and all treats during the training sessions. However, for practice between sessions, we recommend using high-value treats—these are treats your dog loves the most! Additionally, please bring a flat 5 or 6-foot leash (no retractable leashes) and a treat pouch or fanny pack to hold the treats.

  • Many factors contribute to creating a successful training program for your dog. After your initial in-person consultation, we will work together to develop a plan that is tailored to both you and your dog's needs.

  • The oldest saying in dog training is that we're training dog owners as much as we're training the dogs—and honestly, it’s true! For your training program to be successful, you'll need to learn how to effectively communicate and interact with your dog. Whether you choose private sessions or a day training package, your active involvement is essential.

Virtual Training

  • Yes! Because “training the human” is such a key part of dog training, we can cover all kinds of topics during a virtual session, from obedience basics to behavioral guidance.  These sessions are especially useful for talking through unique behavioral challenges, or as a way to brush up on previous training.

  • Before the virtual session, please provide us with some background information about your dog and the topics you'd like to cover. We will send you an in-take form as well to provide us with as much information as possible so our session is productive. Once we have that, we'll schedule a day and time to meet and send you a virtual meeting invite to add to your calendar.

For the virtual session, you'll need a computer with a camera and microphone. We also recommend choosing a quiet location where you can fully focus on the session. To help us better understand the issue, it may be useful for us to see or virtually interact with your dog during the meeting.
